I was playing a lot of music requiring them and it was getting confusing trying to remember them all, so I started writing them down. At the same time, I was playing a lot of music that would go into the extreme altissimo range 6-9 ledger lines up!) that was also requiring memorizing a lot of new fingerings. So, I combined the two efforts and made a quarter-tone fingering chart for the whole range of the instrument, from Low C to the D-quarter-flat that sits above the 9th ledger line above the staff. This was mainly a resource for myself, but I also uploaded it to my webserver and shared the link with colleagues. I knew some people were using it, but I didn’t realize that it was actually getting spread on its own too. The pdf would show up on Google searches and apparently made its way around. I discovered it this past summer at the ICA ClarinetFest this summer in Assisi when I met contemporary clarinetist and composer Eric Mandat, who already knew of me because he uses the fingering chart and gives it to his students! I was already in the process of creating a new chart for Bb clarinet, and took the opportunity to do some updating and reformatting of the bass clarinet chart as well. So now, here they are, extreme range quarter-tone fingering charts for clarinet and bass clarinet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
A few years ago I set out with the task of writing a fingering chart for quarter-tones for the bass clarinet.
